Clutch symptoms

Signs a clutch is wearing out.

A clutch wears a little every time you pull away or change gear, so most drivers notice a change in feel before the car stops moving. Note when it happens. Those details help us choose the right checks for your car.

01 / Slipping

Revs rise but the car doesn't pick up.

A slipping clutch lets engine speed climb without a matching gain in road speed, often on a hill or in a higher gear. A biting point that has crept near the top of the pedal is another common sign. Watch for both.

02 / Pulling away

Judder as you set off.

Shuddering in first or reverse can point to a worn or contaminated friction plate or a flywheel problem, so tell us if it happens from cold or once warm.

03 / Gear changes

Gears that grind or won't engage.

If first or reverse is hard to select at a standstill, the clutch may not be releasing fully, and hydraulic leaks or air in the system are possible causes. Pedal feel matters too.

04 / Smells and noises

A burning smell or a new noise.

A sharp burning smell after a hill start or slow traffic often means the clutch has been slipping and overheating. Whining or rattling that changes when you press the pedal can come from the release bearing. Describe it as best you can.

How we assess a clutch

From first checks to repair plan.

Clutch faults can mimic gearbox and engine problems, so we start by finding the cause.

The clutch sits between the engine and the gearbox, so most of it can't be seen without removing the gearbox. An assessment starts with your description, then hands on checks to find where the fault sits.

We'll explain what we've found and the repair options for your vehicle, and the repair is agreed with you before work begins.

Completion time depends on the vehicle, the parts it needs and workshop availability. Parts supply varies. Send your registration and the symptoms to get started.

Vans and business vehicles

Clutch work for vans and working vehicles.

See van and business vehicle care

Vans that carry heavy loads or spend the day in stop start traffic often wear a clutch faster than a car on mixed driving. Usage matters here. When you enquire, include the make, model and size of the van and a short note on how it's used.

When to stop driving

When a clutch fault means the car should stay put.

A failing clutch can leave you unable to select a gear or move away, sometimes in the middle of a junction. Stop driving if the pedal drops to the floor and stays there, or if you see smoke from under the bonnet. Don't drive it to us.

We offer vehicle recovery for cars and small vans, so send us the location, registration and what happened, and we'll discuss whether recovery to Saville Road is suitable.

Clutch repair questions

Common questions about clutch repairs.

Straight answers to help you describe the problem and arrange the right assessment.

How long does a clutch normally last?

There's no fixed figure. Clutch life depends on how the car is driven, the loads it carries and how much time it spends in slow traffic or on hills. If the pedal feel has changed, it's worth having it checked.

Can a slipping clutch be adjusted instead of replaced?

Usually not on a modern car. Many clutches adjust themselves as they wear, so slipping tends to mean the friction plate is worn or contaminated. A hydraulic fault can occasionally cause similar symptoms, which is why we inspect before recommending a repair.

Will the flywheel need replacing too?

It depends on the car. Some vehicles use a dual mass flywheel, which can wear alongside the clutch and cause its own judder or rattle. We can only say once the vehicle has been inspected.

Can you give me a clutch price over the phone?

A reliable figure normally needs an inspection, because parts and labour vary between makes and models. Cars with the same symptom can need quite different work, depending on whether the flywheel, release bearing or hydraulics are involved. Your registration and a clear description of the symptoms, such as slipping or judder, help us start the conversation. That's why we ask first.

Does sending the enquiry form book my car in?

No. The form sends your registration, preferred dates and symptoms to our team, who review the request and then confirm the appointment details with you. Please wait for that confirmation before bringing the car to Saville Road, and say in the form if it isn't safe to drive.
